IPAF 3a and 3b Training Courses

Improve your operator safety with our IPAF 3a and 3b courses

The IPAF 3a and 3b courses are training programs offered by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) to educate and certify the safe and efficient operation of various Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs).

These training courses are essential for all users to operate the machinery without unnecessary risk to the safety of themselves and others working on site. By completing the course, you will receive your Powered Access License (PAL) card, which is recognised by the HSE, CITB, HAE and the Major Contractors Group (MCG). It also satisfies the PUWER Regulations 1998 and Work at Height Regulations 2005.

What to expect on the day

Come Prepared

  • Due to the practical aspect of this assessment, all delegates will need to be physically fit and capable of performing the practical skills. Candidates will also need to bring a Hi-vis, safety goggles, a hard hat, safety shoes and safety gloves. A full-body safety harness with adjustable restraint lanyard and proof of inspection within the last 12 months, must also be brought with you for the IPAF 3b training category. These are available to purchase from GTAccess.

  • Registration will open at 07:45 and the course will commence at 08:00. A typical course will begin with an introduction from the training team and an explanation of the day’s activities. The trainer will also thoroughly explain all safety protocols and answer any questions the candidates may have.

Theory Session and Written Test

  • The first part of the course will usually involve lectures, discussions and videos about types of MEWPs, principles of operation and governing safety regulations. Candidates should expect to sit a written test to demonstrate understanding.

Practical Training and Assessment

  • The remainder of the day will be practical training where candidates receive hands-on experience operating machinery under the tutelage of instructors. The day will end with practical assessments where candidates must demonstrate proficiency in operating MEWPs safely and efficiently.
